Africa is the only continent to have grown poorer in the past 25 years. Its share of world trade has halved in the generation, and it receives less than 1% of direct foreign investment, 44 million children do not go to school, millions die through famine, or disease, or conflict, and Africa risks being left even further behind. I have said on many occasions that I believe Africa is the scar on the conscience of the world, and I think it is right that we continue to treat this as an absolute priority over the coming years.
The Rt. Hon. Tony Blair Address to The African Commission
MISSION AND KEY GOALS OF THE CENTRE
At its most fundamental level, the mission of the new African Centre for Food Security is to contribute towards eradicating food deprivation and promoting sustainable livelihoods among the people and nations of sub-Saharan Africa. By facilitating and conducting professional training and trans-disciplinary research, and through targeted information dissemination and informed advocacy, it seeks to establish, support and sustain a critical mass of personnel, as well as a network of collaborating institutions and organisations, equipped to lead effective food security policy and practice across the sub-continent.
THE ACFS SURVEY
The African Centre for Food Security (ACFS) has been selected as the SADC Centre of Excellence for Vulnerability Assessment and Analysis and with its SADC partners (Bunda College, University of Malawi and Sokoine University of Agriculture, Tanzania) is conducting a survey of current and required skills for vulnerability assessment and analysis to design appropriate training programmes and qualifications to address the skills shortage in this crucial area. Your participation in this survey is crucial for the identification of the most needed training needs.
